"No one may avail himself of ignorance of the law." - Louisiana Civil Code article 5
Laws exist to regulate human conduct in a civilized society. Due to the complexity of our modern society, our lives are governed by a staggering number of federal and state laws and administrative regulations and local ordinances. After they are enacted and officially published, we are expected to be legally aware of all such laws applicable in the place where we live and what they mean. This rule applies to everyone and is embodied in the saying, "Ignorance of the law is no excuse." But it is simply impossible as a practical matter for any person to be familiar with every such law. For this reason, at some point in your life you may need the services of a trained lawyer to assist you in determining and protecting your legal rights and securing the benefits derived from those rights.
CHOOSING A LAWYER
Your legal objective, question, or problem is important to you, so your choice of an attorney is an important personal choice. If you are seeking legal advice or representation, the fact that you have considered this office through this website suggests that you recognize the importance of thoughtful consideration as to your choice. Your choice of an attorney should not be a quick decision based upon a glance at a highway billboard, a 30-second television advertisement, a catchy slogan, or scanning the yellow pages of a telephone directory.
Your attorney represents you. Your choice of who represents you should be an informed choice. You should consider the qualifications and experience of an attorney whom you consider retaining. While an attorney's claimed "track record" of success in handling client matters is relevant in that regard, a record of case results should be substantially complete or thorough in its history to truly present an honest picture. As a practical matter, any attorney who claims never to have "lost" a case or an argument on a point of law is either untruthful or has not handled many cases. And in the case of lawyers, just as in the case of stocks or mutual funds, "past performance is no guarantee of future results."
Because of the unique nature of your case, its particular facts, and the subjective manner in which the applicable law may sometimes apply to those facts, it is impossible as a practical matter for any legal result to be guaranteed. Any attorney who suggests otherwise is doing a disservice to his client.
I AM NO LONGER ENGAGED IN PRACTICE. I AM RETIRED AND MY STATUS WITH THE STATE BAR ASSOCIATION IS "INACTIVE." IF YOU WANT LEGAL ADVICE, ASK A COMPETENT AND CURRENTLY ACTIVE LAWYER.
